Mooroolbark 356 vs Parkwood 122 & 2/11

Following a promising beginning Parkwood collapsed in a very big heap with Jacko contributing to the rout with 4/28 from 20 overs. We again started soundly with the bat with Hoppy (49), just missing the half ton by one, and Dicky (41). After the tea interval Jason Shepherd let loose on the hapless Parkwood attack smashing an extremely entertaining 134 and helping the total to a massive 356.

Mooroolbark 172 vs Lilydale 5/97

Against a disciplined Lilydale attack we crawled our way (on a slow outfield) to 172. Brad Guan provided the backbone of the innings with a patient 39 n.o.

Day 2 and a crucial wicket (and great catch) just prior to tea saw Lilydale go in at the half time break at 5/97 with both sides needing a big 3rd quarter to surge ahead. Unfortunately the weather prevailed.

Trivia Question: Where & when did the late/great Malcolm Marshall bowl his last maiden over? (Ans. last page)

Mooroolbark 292 vs Parkwood 9/234

John Fisher (70), Butch (92) and Old Man Piggott (33) were the main focus of our score of 292. Parkwood replied with 234. Matthew Gale 3/32 and Col Perrett 3/46 were our restrictive force.

Mooroolbark 5/108 vs Lilydale 214

1:10pm Saturday 30th October 1999 - Through the gates of the Lilydale Showgrounds came the Kingswood, the Muzz Mobile - the man was back in town. Matt Gale bowled well with the new ball taking three important early wickets to get us off to a good start. Then it was time for the Murray Dehoon show. In an inspired spell Muzz claimed four scalps and had Lilydale dismissed for 214.

Unfortunately rain washed out play on the second day with the game evenly poised at 5/108 (Plugger 37 n.o. and Bryn Griffiths 38 n.o.).

Mooroolbark 315 & 2/72 vs Parkwood 163

This game was promoted heavily during the week as former Barker Rick Pieters made his celebrated return to Kiloran as Parkwood captain after accepting a big contract over the winter. After the initial excitement died down the Barkers proceeded to plunder the Parkwood attack for 315. Excellent contributions were made by Chandler 3 debutante, John O’Donnell (92), Bryn (Mr. Run Machine) Griffiths (60) and Dash (who says he can’t bat) with 47. Parkwood’s batting proved brittle with Mark Ross 2/8 and Shane Archer getting 2/16 to limit the total to 163. In our second innings (9 overs) Rob Mantel (53) single handedly smashed the attack to all parts of the ground (and some poor bloke’s roof).

Mooroolbark 259 vs Lilydale 8/274

We were struggling a little bit at 3/8 when Rob (The Bludgeoner) Mantel stepped up to the crease and with his usual flair and delicate deflections blasted his way to 72. Captain Archer also led from the front with 54 and combined well with contributions from Ryan Mullett (46) and Daryl Emery (34 n.o.) as a competitive total of 259 was compiled. Lilydale dug themselves into a hole and then proceeded to dig themselves out with good late order batting. They managed 8/274 with Emery 2/44 (21 overs) and Matt (son of Major) Mitchell 2/30.

Mooroolbark 3/236 dec. vs Parkwood 90 & 6/84

Donna won the toss and had no hesitation in sending the Pumas in take on the might of the Mooroolbark attack. Adam Guy opened up with JB and bowled an excellent spell without luck. JB was taken off after two overs as he was not suited into the wind. Tim Meredith replaced him upwind and went about tearing the heart out of the Parkwood top order returning the sensational figures of 4/10 off 9.5 overs. JB returned to bowl downwind and was just as miserly claiming 3/10 off 13 overs, including one controversial LBW decision. Donna picked up 2/15 and copped a hiding from the kids while Travis Kane continued his solid form picking up one. The fielding was very good all day as Parkwood were rolled for 90. Ryan Mullett took a brilliant one hander at slip that would have put Mark Taylor to shame. With 20 odd overs to bat at the end of the day we slumped to 2/14 after poor shots from Brad and Ryan before Patch and Luke Miller saw us to 2/42 at stumps.

Day 2 and Patch and Luke put on a show. They were savage on anything short and brutal on anything overpitched. Suddenly we had passed them after only 10 overs. They continued to plunder a hapless Parkwood attack and finally after a 179 run stand Patch was out for a well made 105, the highlight being a massive 6 over mid wicket. Luke was on 62 at the time and continued on to his maiden century finishing on 110 n.o., with anything on his body or legs hitting the boundary. After declaring at 3/236 we had 40 overs at them where poor catching did little to help our cause. Apart from excellent bowling again from Adam Guy (3 wickets in 4 balls) the rest of the bowlers performed below expectations. However both the centurions managed to get a wicket each, proving the old adage "sh*t gets wickets."

Mooroolbark 6/82 vs Lilydale 167

Batting first Lilydale got off to a good start putting on 50 for the first wicket. At 2/96 at tea the boys looked like chasing a big score. However Craig Holwell and Travis Kane had other ideas. Craig claimed the vital wicket before tea and continued on after tea with devastating effect. The only way they scored runs was over the top of the cordon as he had them jumping abut everywhere. At the other end Travis ‘BP’ Kane was going about his business with a minimum of fuss., bowling a miserly 13 overs and conceding a meagre 13 runs in which he also snared 5 wickets. It really was a magnificent bowling spell from both boys to put us right back in the contest rolling the Dales for 167. The unusual combination of Ducky and Quack opened the batting seeing us to stumps at 0/6. The next week saw no one really get a start and a quick slump before tea saw us go from 2/50 to 6/66 before Donna (18 n.o.) and Sammy (7 n.o.) saw us to tea at 6/82 when the game was washed out. The major highlight was the high standard of catching with Donna taking a ripper, Ross Stevens a blinder at first slip and Travis Kane an absolute blinder off his own bowling. However the theme for this week is the batsmen have to learn how to build an innings.

Fifth XI

Mooroolbark 9/248 & 2/66 vs Bayswater Park 112

Kim Blake (60) and Trevor Keogh (43) led the way to a respectable total of 9/248. The opposition, according to our vertically challenged captain, were half a dozen players short of being a class act. They made 112 with Ducky taking 3/0 from 4 overs. Ben Woods knocked up 35 n.o. in our second innings of 2/66.

Mooroolbark 9/309 vs Templeton 7/214

Our good form with the willow continues. Kim Blake another excellent score of 71, Mick Fay an explosive 53 and the medically suspect Peter (Major) Mitchell (he’s old enough to be an early explorer) settled for 85 when a ton was beckoning. A number of excuses for missing the century were given - my hamstring, my captain, condition of the wicket, poor umpiring. The only one he didn’t mention was the bowler!!

Templeton replied with 7/214. Mr. Newsagent took 3/86 (21 overs) and Ross Newbegin assisted with 3/62.

Sixth XI

Mooroolbark 63 & 7/111 vs Lilydale 142

A disastrous first innings of 63 enabled Lilydale (142) to take the points. Chris James gave them some curry however to snare 6/33. In our second dig Peter Mitchell contributed 39 in our total of 7/111. Lilydale’s bowling hero was in the thirds next round.

Mooroolbark 7/228 vs Boronia 9/139

Boronia scored 9/139 all day - BORING!! The bowling was shared around to keep people awake. Woodsy 3/14 (how can you not clobber his off breaks?), "Chuck" Newey 2/12 and Coxy with 2/29 took the honours.

Despite the impending rain Woodsy (who falsely claims all-rounder hero status) carved a majestic maiden ton (109 n.o.) for the club and with Ash Burton adding a red inker (46 n.o.) we totalled 7/238.

Seventh XI

Mooroolbark 146 vs Croydon Ranges 207

Despite dropping early catches we battled on and dismissed Croydon for 203. Skippy trundled down a marathon spell, ending with 5/61. Young Cameron Linford (under 14) with 2/51 showed excellent control with his off breaks. Unfortunately our batting proved brittle with only Brett Purcell (32) and Cameron Linford (40 n.o.) showing what was required in our total of 146

Mooroolbark 4/252 vs Templeton 3/109

Following the loss of two early wickets, a series of 50 plus scores soared our total to 4/252. Nick McConnell scored his maiden fifty (53) with a mixture of classic drives and unusual pull shots. Don (I really haven’t been away for 2 years) Grigg cultivated 54 whilst red ink specialist Cameron Linford again demonstrated how to build an innings (59 n.o.) and Geoff Watkins chipped in with 58 n.o. Day 2 saw a washout however Troy Cassidy with 2/29 bowled well in our opponents score of 3/103.
